Cows and Beef

Once a year we buy in a handful of cattle for beef. The aim is to do a beef animal every quarter, processing it over a couple of weeks to get a nice hanging time and provide a couple of weeks of fresh meat before stocking the freezer but we aren't quiet there yet (we haven't quiet made it to quarterly!). Although we have tried Dexters and Red Poll in the past we are leaning more towards the Red Poll at the moment; they produce fantastic tasting beef (if we do say so ourselves) and they are are cross between Norfolk Red beef cattle and the Suffolk Dun dairy cattle (both of which are now extinct) making them a regional species.

Beef gets a lot of bad press these day when it comes to environmental impact but research tells us that this isn't the full picture. When raised on pasture and moved regularly cows can be a vital part of a regenerative system by providing nitrogen/nutrients to the soil, stomping in seeds, creating hoof prints to pool water and stimulating plant growth. Given this we now only raise our beef animals on grass, hay and vegetables (grain free / grass fed / pasture reared) and fully intend to incorporate them into an alley system once we have them in place.

If you wish to be notified of when you can next purchase beef from us please advise us of your email address and we will advise you a week or two in advance that it is on it's way.
